The workshop will help the therapist identify how to implement policies and procedures related to best practice working with young people in crisis.
This one day workshop will be experiential in nature addressing the needs of young people who struggle with suicide ideation, have made attempts or engaging in self harm. It will build confidence and assurance for those responding to these issues in their line of work. This workshop will also incorporate child protection and issues that can arise when working with high risk children and adolescents.
Who is this course for?
This workshop is designed for professionals who provide support to children and adolescents in crisis. These professionals include Accredited Psychotherapists, Counselling Students, Psychologists, Social Care Workers, Residential Care Workers, Schools counsellors and aligned professionals.
What are the benefits of doing this course?
The key benefits would be to increase confidence, provide skills to respond to young people who disclose suicide ideation or engaging in self harm as a coping strategy. The workshop would address the fears students may feel working with young people in crisis and how to self care. Very often there is a fear about losing a client through suicide and my experience will address and support students in this. I also feel one of the key benefits is to focus also on the many positive outcomes and fun experiences of working with children and adolescents. This is an important topic and can be heavy so the workshop would also focus on having a healthy balance and the students feel enlightened.
What will you learn?
This course will provide insight into the work with children and adolescents whose only survival mechanism is self harm or who sadly have made suicide attempts. Students will be introduced to how the consistent relationship with a therapist can move the young person out of crisis very quickly. Skills to respond to the young person’s emotional needs and support parents who often feel disempowered in their role when faced with the fear of self harm and suicide ideation will also be introduced. Insight in relation to child protection concerns will be gleaned and a focus on the many positive outcomes that emerge when young people engage in early intervention. Attending this workshop will provide confidence for students if a client presents in crisis.
