New developments in Child & Adoloscent Counselling & Psychotherapy

With Dr. Cóilin Ó Braonáin

Cork Education Support Centre

August 9th 6-8pm

Cost: FREE

For many years, early intervention has has advocated as a means of ameliorating child and adolescent emotional and behavioural difficulties. Early intervention was also considered by some to stave-off psychological problems in adult life.

Now, however, persuasion is no longer necessary, because a substantial body of research evidence shows that the pioneers' instincts were correct. It is now indisputable that not only is therapeutic work necessary for many children, but that the cost of providing such resources is ultimately far less than that of ignoring the problems. The savings in both human suffering and in state finances are clear and measurable.

This talk will outline the most up to date research evidence that supports a need for the increased availability of counselling for young people, drawing on the work of Professor Mick Cooper, a leader in the field of child and adolescent psychological research.

Dr. Cóilín Ó Braonáin Reg.Psychol., P.S.I. has been practising psychotherapy and psychology in Limerick and the Mid-West of Ireland for 15 years. He works with adults, adolescents and children using a variety of psychological therapies.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree (magna cum lauda) in Psychology and Philosophy from Marquette University in Wisconsin, USA and a Master’s degree in Humanistic and Integrative Psychotherapy (1st) was awarded by the University of Limerick. More recently Cóilín earned a doctorate in Developmental Psychology at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. Other courses completed include a Certificate in Play Therapy from the Children’s Therapy Centre in Westmeath, and a certificate in Filial Play Coaching from Play Therapy Ireland.
